Program your Nokia N900 with FCamera

The Nokia N900 is the first smart phone that supports FCamera open source platform that allows anyone to develop new features and applications to change the way the camera works.

The Nokia Research Center and Stanford University, are developing a pilot project called Open Source FCamera that will allow developers to create innovative applications to change the way we use the cameras. The Nokia N900 is chosen as a support team for those who want to experiment with this original idea.

The objective is to manage FCamera algorithms settings directly control the cameras and capture the images. The platform is based on Linux, which is why we have chosen the Nokia N900 as a test terminal.

Currently have already developed several applications among which are Low-light HDR Imaging and Capture. The first two photos in succession ago when the atmosphere is very dark and combines to reduce the noise level. The latter may take up to three photos to combine the best areas exposed to each in high contrast scenes and get pictures without black or burned areas.

Develop new program for reporting internet fraud

A Microsoft-led initiative seeks to provide a reliable way in reporting internet fraud especially credit card numbers and other data on the Internet.

Creating such a possibility is important because when a researcher finds stolen data, it is difficult to convince a bank or other institution to which the information is legitimate. The time lost can mean the difference between the fraudulent use of identity of a person and effective action to stop it before it happens.

The initiative would help researchers to manage the data they find on the internet and which inform the affected companies, said Dan Clements, former president of CardCops (Card Cops), which seeks stolen card numbers on the web.

When a researcher finds stolen data, “send them all at once. The ship companies, government, consumers … In this way, they have complete information and can act accordingly,” he said.

“It might seem at close range, but is the only way we can make sure our work. However, we have no way of knowing if it is effective,” he said.

The speed of transmitting information is creating new program that Microsoft will be the key to its success, said Clements.

The program is managed by the National Alliance Ciberforenses and Training, a nonprofit group, and includes the American Bankers Association and eBay, among others.

Similar programs in the past failed because the companies selling online and gambling sites could not find a way to cooperate without an intermediary, said Clements.

Increasingly, banks, businesses selling over the Internet and web security will be added to the program, once to register and pass a security check.

Starbucks offers free Wi-Fi local U.S. 6700

Starbucks Corp. will offer its unlimited wireless Internet network to all customers in its branches in the United States starting next month, part of an effort to attract more clients, the company said Monday.

The Free Wi-Fi will be available from 1 July at 6700 local.

The coffee chain, which this year had its first quarterly increase in referrals after 13 quarters without success, had offered two hours of free internet per day for registered users.

After this period customers of the chain, founded in Seattle, had to pay a small fee.

Access will be offered through AT & T, but to use it not necessary to have a Starbucks loyalty card, according to an announcement made by the CEO Howard Schultz at a conference in New York.

The move comes six months after the rival of Starbucks, McDonald’s Corp., to offer free Wi-Fi access in 11 500 U.S. stores.

The death of eight teenagers occurred in the last three months and related to an Internet gambling has caused alarm in Argentina, fearing that such deaths would increase to the local media reported today.

Local authorities Rosario de la Frontera in the province of Salta, about 600 thousand kilometers from Buenos Aires, said that in the last three months eight children died from asphyxiation caused by them.

The main line of research points to “Shocking Game” or “Game of Death“, which through the Internet invites users to self-asphyxiation and resist as much time as possible without oxygen, to pass out, causing a sensation called euphoria.

Salta police chief, Gabriel Escalante, explained that teenagers who died were between 13 and 17 years and who were found hanged in ties, scarves or ropes at home.

He added that it is investigating whether the youths were encouraged by someone else, although he acknowledged that the tracks are rather scarce.

He also ruled that the deaths have been caused by a ritual because each has distinctive signs, as the material used to cause suffocation.

The alarm is such that the provincial government and organized a Crisis Committee, as director of a school where three victims had already confessed his fear that there is “a perverse mind” that is inducing adolescents.

“It’s a social problem that has overwhelmed us, the kids do not want to talk and parents are scared,” said Maria Luis Leon, director of the School of Commerce.

Japan develops super fast scanner for books

You can simply browse a book that does not seem the best way to scan, but a group of Japanese researchers at the University of Tokyo created super fast scanner new software that allows hundreds of pages to be scanned in minutes.

Scan paper is usually a tedious process in which each page has to be inserted into a flatbed scanner, but a team led by Professor Masatoshi Ishikawa uses a high speed camera that takes 500 pictures per second to scan pages as they are passed .

Normal scanners can only scan the information to be placed directly before them on the page. Developing the new scanner has no problem with the fact that pages are usually deformed in some way to pass.

“Take a picture of the way, then calculates the form and use these estimates to record scanning,” Ishikawa said, explaining the system used to reconstruct the original page.

“As you can record while understand the underlying form is very easy to make pages that are being scanned and saved as a normal flat copy,” he added.

The current system can scan an average of 200-250 pages book in just over 60 seconds using a basic computer equipment available for sale.

Although it now requires additional time to process the scanned images, the researchers hope that with time the technology is faster and much smaller.

“In the more distant future, when it is possible to put all this on a chip and then put in an IPAD or iPod, you could simply scan using that chip. At that point, it will be possible to scan something quickly to record it and read it later” Ishikawa told Reuters.

To scan books with an iPhone might be a bit far, but Ishikawa said that a commercial version of the scanning system based on a computer may be available in two or three years.

Although technology has the potential to take paper books into the digital age, it remains to be seen how publishers will react to the fact that people can scan their books simply turning the pages.

Group Barcelona Team Moon composed Catalan scientists send a robot to the moon in the context of international competition of robotic exploration of space ‘Google Lunar X Prize’, by 2012, although the organization still unknown the exact date.

In particular, it is an international competition that challenges engineers and entrepreneurs from around the world to develop low-cost systems for space robotic exploration, and research on the characteristics of the Moon for using of renewable energy.

The prize is worth $ 30 million if it can be landed on the Moon a privately funded spacecraft on the moon (with a maximum of 5 million in public financing if necessary), travel 500 meters over the lunar surface and transmit a video, images and data back to Earth, all before 31 December 2012.

Barcelona Team Moon is the first team based in Spain to participate, which consists of private companies, research institutes, professional and scientific areas, mostly consisting of members Catalans.

The team leader, Xavier Claramunt, said that this project is a “great adventure”, as it has a potential “impressive poses new challenges,” which it hopes to do future as Barcelona “can do very well and even lead the thing.” “Through our participation we want to promote collaboration between the Spanish aerospace industry, academia and society as a whole,” he said.

The team will participate in this competition with his robot ‘Rovert’, which currently has 21 teams, and the project ‘Selena’, which is the study of mineral ilemita that achieved with water vapor, and demonstrate whether it is effective to recycle hydrogen and air using the remainder.

Barcelona Moon Team also aims to explore the Moon and see if the characteristics of the star would be favorable to humanity if cataclysm or catastrophe, claiming it is “necessary” a project of environmental protection, since the Earth “has arrived a little late.”
