One hundred years ago, on 21 September 1909 in Salzburg (Upper Austria), the young Albert Einstein presented publicly for the first time his theory of relativity, published in 1905.

This work, which revolutionized physics, were received at the time rather coldly by his colleagues.

In the school gym Andrae, which conducted the meeting of researchers in natural sciences and German doctors, the famous formula E = mc2 (energy equals mass times the speed of light squared) did not cause a sensation. These did not realize its scope.

Following the intervention of Einstein about the nature of matter and radiation, one of the most renowned physicists of the time, the German Max Planck, who knew Einstein’s work since its publication in Berlin, gave a lively discussion among that public of future Nobel laureates, receiving end Einstein in 1921.

Despite the discussions, Einstein, only 30, who was competing in his first Congress, was on the verge of international recognition.

Used previously in the Bern patent office, had just been appointed professor at the Swiss capital, then it was in Zurich. Then continue its work in Berlin before fleeing the Nazis in 1933 for the United States.
